This vintage flat-plane hand-carved Scandinavian folk art figure depicts an old woman in traditional dress with a long skirt and striped apron with matching head scarf. She has her hands clasped behind her back and is carrying a large, beautifully carved, leather-handled basket. The face and hands are in the style of Carl Trygg. The base is marked H.J. (presumably the carver’s initials). An identical woman with the same maker’s signature has been seen also bearing a Made in Sweden stamp. Dates to about the 1940s.
Measures 6-1/2 inches tall. Base measures 2 × 2-1/2 inches.
