Unlike a standard applique, an IOD Paint Inlay works through a process of pigment embedding. When the carrier paper is applied to wet, clay-based paint, the design is absorbed into the surface. This creates a molecular-level bond rather than a surface-level layer. The result is a finish that is completely level with your piece - no "edge" lines or halo effects common with lower-quality alternatives.

The Essential Buying Guide: Inlays vs. Transfers

A common question we hear in our Poulsbo studio is: "Should I use an inlay or a decor transfer?"

• Choose a Transfer if you are working on a dry, non-porous surface and want a crisp, modern look.
• Choose a Paint Inlay if you want an authentic, "painted-on" feel. Because the inlay reacts with your medium, it is ideal for creating a time-worn patina.
• Expert Tip: You can often get a "second press" out of your inlay sheets. After your first application, the sheet will still hold residual pigment. Apply it again for a softer, "ghost" version of the design on a secondary project.

Professional Finishing & Sealing

Because the paint in the inlay remains "active" until sealed, your choice of topcoat is critical. We recommend a high-quality water-based sealer to lock in the design.
